I believe John started this analysis with his earlier book "Net Gain" (the book was idealistic towards the costs of growing user communities, assuming linear scaling costs). We used this book successfully to pitch with Venture Capitalists in Germany for an online music community.

Bruce Eckel's (Thinking in Java) weblog has a new article on scalable Info-Communities. Good article: http://www.artima.com/weblogs/viewpost.jsp?thread=113330

The problem is that these wicked transaction costs (Eckel mentions "Enthropy") bog down the returns of decentral organization.

So, how can small scale?
